How the Signage Compliance Checker Works

This free tool checks whether your CCTV signage meets the core transparency requirements that apply to UK businesses under the UK GDPR and ICO guidance on CCTV and video surveillance. Answer a few questions about what your signs say and where they are placed to get a pass/fail result with specific fixes for any gaps.

What a Compliant CCTV Sign Must Include

A generic “CCTV in operation” sticker does not meet the requirements. To be transparent under the UK GDPR (Articles 13–14), your sign should state that recording is taking place, name your business as the data controller, explain the purpose of the recording, and give contact details so people can ask questions or request footage. Signs must be visible before people enter the monitored area, and there should be one at every entrance.

The Surveillance Camera Code of Practice also sets transparency as one of its 12 guiding principles. While the Code legally binds only police and local authorities, the ICO expects all organisations to follow it as best practice.

This tool provides general guidance based on standard ICO requirements. It is not legal advice. For complex setups — covert cameras, audio recording, or multiple sites — consult a qualified data protection professional.
